Dissolving an electrical contracting business in Iowa
What must an electrical contractor close when dissolving a business in Iowa?
Two licences and a registration sit behind the company
An Iowa electrical company stands on three separate things. Each one is held and ended differently.
The first is the electrical contractor licence. The state's rules issue it to a person who holds or employs an active master electrician and is registered as a contractor with the labor services division of Iowa Workforce Development. The term is three years and the fee is $375.
The second is each electrician's own licence. The board licenses the individuals at several classes, from apprentice to master. Those belong to the people, not the company.
The third is the contractor registration with the Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing. It carries a non-refundable annual fee of $50, and the application requires a valid unemployment insurance account number.

The insurance has to outlast the last job
The most important sequencing rule for this trade is about insurance. Do not cancel the liability policy while you still hold the licence and open work.
An Iowa electrical contractor licensee must keep general and complete operations liability insurance of at least $1 million at all times. The carrier must notify the board 30 days before any cancellation or reduction.
If that cover stops, the licensee must cease operation immediately. The rule also bars starting work that cannot be finished before a known cancellation date. So the policy is one of the last things to end, after the final inspection.

What happens to the master electrician's own licence
The master electrician behind the company has a choice the rest of the crew does not. They can keep the credential without keeping the work.
When a master electrician licence comes due for renewal, the holder can ask for inactive status instead. The fee is $75 rather than $375. An inactive holder cannot perform work that requires the licence, but keeps the path back.
Reinstating an active licence means meeting every requirement of an active licence during the inactive term. It also means paying the active fee, with no refund of the inactive fee. For an owner who may return to the trade, that is the cheapest way to hold the door open.

The permits and inspections that must finish first
Open electrical permits are the one liability this trade carries that a filing cannot close. A permit pulled under the company's name belongs to the company. An inspection that never happens stays on the record.
Iowa's electrical permitting runs through the department's online state permitting and inspection system. A manual application with inspection fees is the paper route. Inspection fees are normally paid when the permit is obtained. Additional fees can arrive later if an inspector modifies the permit.
Before the dissolution, finish or formally close every open permit. The state's rule on past-due fees is its own warning: a fee more than 180 days past due can be referred for collection. The wind-up period is the legal window for that work. Paying creditors when an Iowa LLC dissolves covers how the claims notices fence it off.

The tax half of the closing
Electrical work sits on Iowa's list of taxable services. That can make the sales and use tax permit part of a contractor's registrations, alongside a withholding account if the crew was on payroll.
Those close with the same filings as every other trade. Use the Iowa Business Tax Cancellation, form 92-034, or the online cancellation in GovConnectIowa. Returns are due through the cancellation date, and the final due date is the end of the following month.
The unemployment insurance account is a separate agency and a separate form. Iowa Workforce Development closes it on form 68-0294. The contractor registration application asks for that account number, so confirm the registration's status before you close the account. Cancel your Iowa tax accounts and permits walks all three.

The order for a contractor specifically
A contractor's closing runs the general order with three trade-specific rules. Finish the open permits first. Keep the liability insurance until the last inspection. Settle the crew's final payroll before the tax accounts.
Then cancel the tax permits and decide what happens to the licences. The board's rules describe how licences are issued, renewed and made inactive. They do not describe a closing filing, so ask the board in writing how it wants the contractor licence handled.
Last of all, file the $5 statement of dissolution and, once the wind-up is done, the statement of termination. If the company's name is worth keeping, what happens if an Iowa LLC just stops filing covers the other exit, and what it costs to dissolve a business in Iowa prices this one.

Questions
Does the contractor licence cancel when the LLC dissolves?
The board's rules describe issuing, renewing and inactivating licences. They do not describe an automatic cancellation on dissolution. Ask the board in writing how it wants a closing contractor licence handled, and keep the reply with your records.
Do my electricians lose their licences when the business closes?
No. Electrician licences are issued to the individuals, at classes from apprentice to master. The company's dissolution does not end them, and they renew on their own cycle.
Can a master electrician keep the licence without working?
Yes, through inactive status. When the licence is due for renewal, the holder can request inactive status for $75 instead of paying $375 for an active licence. An inactive holder cannot perform work that requires the licence.
When can I cancel the liability insurance?
After the last licensed work and inspection. A licensee must keep at least $1 million of general and complete operations liability cover at all times and must cease operation if it ends. The carrier also notifies the board 30 days before any cancellation.
Which tax accounts does an electrical contractor close in Iowa?
The sales and use tax permit and withholding account with the Department of Revenue, through GovConnectIowa or form 92-034. The unemployment insurance account closes with Workforce Development on form 68-0294. Returns are still due through the cancellation date.
