Dissolving a salon business in Iowa
What must a salon close when the business dissolves in Iowa?
The licence belongs to the establishment
A salon in Iowa is licensed twice over, and the two licences end differently, which is the whole shape of closing this trade.
The Iowa Board of Barbering and Cosmetology Arts and Sciences licenses the professionals: barber and cosmetology licences, esthetician and nail technologist licences, each held by the person. The board also licenses the establishment itself, the shop where the chairs stand, through the establishment licence.
The application fee for an establishment licence is $80, nonrefundable, and the application should be submitted at least 30 days before opening day. The board's own page says a change in location or in ownership cancels the existing licence and requires a new application. The stylists' licences are separate and travel with them. None of this is the $5 filing: that is the entity, explained here.

Booth renters end on their own paperwork
Most salons close with chairs rented to independent stylists, and those renters are not the company's employees. Their endings are their own, which cuts the salon's closing work both ways.
The salon's own dissolution covers the entity, the establishment licence and the tax permits in the company's name. A renting stylist's business ends with their own filings, and their professional licence stays theirs wherever they land next.
The line decides the payroll tail. Employees carry the final W-2 calendar and the unemployment account; renters do not. Which chairs were which, on the last day, is the first thing to establish before the final tax filings are prepared, and misclassifying them is the expensive way to find out.

Service sales and the sales tax permit
Salon services sell with sales tax collected on them, so the tax permit is the salon's biggest ending after the entity itself.
The Iowa Department of Revenue's rule is the same for a salon as for any business: if you are closing, you must cancel all tax permits and file returns through the permit cancellation date. Once issued, a permit stays effective until it is cancelled or revoked, whatever the shop's status.
The cancellation goes in through GovConnectIowa or on form 92-034, the Iowa Business Tax Cancellation, and the form's own rule sets the calendar: returns run to the effective cancellation date, and the final due date is the end of the month following it. Cancel your Iowa tax accounts and permits walks the whole thing, including the retail products side if the shop sold them.

Employees and the last chair
Where the salon had employees, the payroll tail runs to its own calendar and none of it waits for the entity filing.
The final 941 covers the quarter with the last wage payments, with the closed box checked and the date final wages were paid entered. W-2s go out by that return's due date, not by January. Form 940 files final for the year, its final box checked, and the payroll-records statement names who keeps the records and where.
Iowa's unemployment account closes on Workforce Development's form 68-0294, the Application for Termination of Coverage. The IRS expects employment tax records kept for at least four years after the last return, which for a salon is client cards and payroll both. The closing order page puts every one of these before the dissolution.

The order for a salon specifically
A salon's closing runs the general order with the establishment licence folded in near the end, when the shop's last day lands.
The sequence runs in this order. Finish the book and sell through the retail stock. Pay the staff their final wages and send the claims notices to suppliers and product lines. File the final federal returns with the W-2s out on time. Cancel the tax permits and file the $5 statement of dissolution. Then ask the board how it wants the establishment licence handled.
Two endings matter more for this trade than their cost suggests: the establishment licence, because $80 was paid to open and nothing is refunded to close, and the EIN letter to Cincinnati, because it only works after every return is filed and every tax is paid. Dissolution services for Iowa businesses covers who can carry the entity half of that list.

Questions
Does the establishment licence cancel when the salon dissolves?
The board's page says a change in location or in ownership cancels the licence and requires a new application. It does not describe a closing filing, so ask the board how it wants a closing shop handled. The stylists' own professional licences are personal and unaffected by the company's ending.
Do my stylists lose their licences when the salon closes?
No. Professional licences in barbering and cosmetology are issued to the individuals by the board. They renew on their own calendar and follow the stylist to the next shop or a rented chair elsewhere.
What about the stylists who rented chairs?
Their businesses are separate. The salon's dissolution ends the entity, the establishment licence and the permits in the company's name. Each renting stylist closes their own accounts, if they close at all, on their own filings.
How much is the salon's establishment licence application fee?
$80, nonrefundable, submitted no less than 30 days before the anticipated opening day. None of it comes back at closing, which is worth knowing before paying for a licence a closing shop will not use.
Can I sell retail products after cancelling the sales tax permit?
Returns must be filed through the permit cancellation date. So sales after that date collect tax with no account to report it on. Sell through the stock first, or set the cancellation date after the last sale.
