Dissolving a food truck business in Iowa
What must a food truck close when the business shuts down in Iowa?
The licence stays with its holder and location
A food truck in Iowa is licensed as a mobile food unit, and the Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing regulates it alongside restaurants, bars and the rest of the state's food businesses.
A separate licence is required for each location where food production, sales or service takes place. Food licences are nontransferable between locations or owners. So the licence does not pass to the members when the company dissolves. Anyone who takes the truck over applies for their own.
The LLC ends with a $5 statement of dissolution. The food licence has its own rules. The department's pages describe applying and renewing, and they say nothing about a closing filing. The department invites questions, so ask its Food Safety Bureau how a closing truck should handle the licence. What a statement of dissolution actually does separates the entity filing from all of this.

Renewal, expiry and the fee the licence owes
The mobile food unit licence renews through the department's online food licensing system, and the timing detail matters for a truck closing mid-season: renewals can be made online only while the licence is not more than 60 days overdue.
The licence fee is not a flat number. New applications and renewals that do not include the previous year's gross sales pay the maximum licence registration fee. So the truck's books decide what the last renewal costs. If a final renewal is ever needed to finish a season, report the gross sales to keep the fee honest.
Operating without the licence is the trap that bites during a slow wind-down. Providing food without a licence or permit is subject to a penalty equal to double the licence fee. The last events of the season run on a licence that is still current, or they do not run.
One timing note for a truck closing now. DIAL's Food Safety Bureau will launch SAFHER, a new online licensing system, in October 2026.

The sales tax permit is the big one
A food truck sells prepared food, and Iowa taxes prepared food. So the trade's biggest tax closure is the one every business shares: the Iowa sales and use tax permit.
The permit does not end with the licence or the entity. Once issued, it is effective until it is cancelled by the owner or revoked by the Department, and the Department of Revenue's own instruction is to cancel all tax permits when closing the business and file returns through the permit cancellation date.
The cancellation is one step: online through GovConnectIowa, or on form 92-034, the Iowa Business Tax Cancellation, whose final-due-date rule sets the calendar: returns run to the effective cancellation date, and the final due date is the end of the month following. Cancel your Iowa tax accounts and permits walks it.

Staff, events and the payroll tail
A truck with staff carries the whole payroll tail, and event catering can extend it past the last parked day.
The final federal employment filings run on the quarter with the last wage payments: the final 941 with its closed box and the date final wages were paid, the final 940 with its final box checked, and the W-2s out by the final return's due date. Iowa's withholding account rides the 92-034 cancellation, and the unemployment account closes with Workforce Development on form 68-0294.
Event licences deserve one last check before the wind-down ends. Temporary food establishment and event licence applications must be received in enough time to be returned before the event, and vendors are asked to apply at least 30 days ahead. A truck finishing its booked events is still serving food under Iowa's rules until the last ticket is sold.

The order for a food truck specifically
Finish the booked events under a current licence, run the last payroll out, cancel the tax permits. Then dissolve the entity, and terminate once the season is settled.
The licence's own rules do part of the trade-specific work: it does not transfer, and one is needed for each location. The truck itself, the commissary agreements and the event deposits are ordinary wind-up business. The Iowa Code lets a dissolved LLC still transfer property and settle disputes while it wraps.
Two resources carry the rest: the closing order page for the sequence with every step in it, and what it costs to dissolve a business in Iowa for the budget. One warning is worth repeating. The penalty for unlicensed sales is double the fee, so do not let the licence run out before the last event.

Questions
Does a food truck licence transfer to a new owner in Iowa?
No. Food licences are nontransferable between locations or owners, and a separate licence is required for each location. A buyer of the truck applies for their own licence; the closing owner does not transfer one.
What happens to the food licence when the business dissolves?
The department's pages do not describe a closing filing. They describe applying and renewing, and renewal is available online only while the licence is not more than 60 days overdue. Ask the Food Safety Bureau before you let it run out, and keep its answer with your records.
Does the food licence fee depend on sales?
Yes. Applications and renewals that do not include the previous year's gross sales pay the maximum licence registration fee, so the books set the fee. Include gross sales on the final renewal if one is ever filed.
Can I run one last event after cancelling the sales tax permit?
Not cleanly. Returns must be filed through the permit cancellation date, so tax collected after that date has no account to land on. Sequence the last event before the cancellation date, or set the cancellation date after it.
Who do I cancel the food licence with?
The Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing, which regulates food businesses including food trucks. Its pages describe applying and renewing but no closing filing, so ask the Food Safety Bureau how it wants a closing truck handled.
